United States: An unusual incident was reported at a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea after a girl lost her life after falling into a sand hole on Tuesday.

According to the preliminary information by the officials, the girl died after getting trapped in the hole. Along with the girl, a boy was also hospitalized in critical condition after falling into the sand hole.  

Broward Sheriff immediately reported the complaint!

The reports by NBC6 have revealed that the Broward Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics reached the spot at around 3:16 pm at the 4400 block of El Mar Drive. The incident was revealed after the footage from the Chopper 6 showed that a massive crowd was standing near the massive sand hole.

After reaching the spot, the area was roped off, and the girl and boy, who were 7-year-old and 9-year-old respectively, were rushed to the hospital. Both were in critical condition, according to the preliminary information by the BSO.

However, the girl was announced dead shortly after reaching the hospital.

What is the identity of the deceased girl and injured boy?

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has revealed that the deceased girl was identified as Sloan Mattingly, and the boy was her younger brother, Maddox Mattingly, and is currently seeking treatment in the hospital as he is severely injured.

What do the eyewitnesses have to say?

The spokesperson for Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, Sandra King, has mentioned that the eyewitnesses said that the children were playing around after digging the hole, and the ground gave way. Accordingly, the sand hole was approximately 5 to 6 feet deep.

The videos associated with the incident have been massively shared on social media. One of the videos showed that the people at the beach were trying to protect the kids by using their hands to dig sand out of the hole. The people were continuously doing one or the other thing to rescue the kids trapped underneath.

Arrival of paramedics and firefighters on the site

As per NBC 6, the Broward County Sheriff released the list of 911 calls on Wednesday.

Some reports have also mentioned that the first deputies arrived at the site four minutes after the collapse, following which paramedics and firefighters also arrived and commenced the rescue operation.

King further elaborated on how the kids were rescued from the hole and stated that the boards were used to keep sand from collapsing further in, and shovels were used to dig the children out.

Past similar incidents!

As many as 52 documented instances have been reported in which people have been buried under the sand, according to the report in the New England Journal of Medicine 2007. The data revealed the instances that took place between 1997 and 2007.

Out of the total, 31 people lost their lives after falling into a sand hole. Accordingly, the victims ranged between 3 and 21 years old.

According to the reports, a similar incident took place on a New Jersey beach where a 2-year-old boy buried himself alive after the sand collapsed. The boy was quickly dug out by his father – which saved his life.

Along with this, in the year 2022, a 35-year-old man died after the sand collapsed. Certain reports have outlined that the body of the victim was found under sand by somebody after approximately three hours.
